HOKI MAI TAMA MA
Equity members Gerald Urquhart, Ascia Maybury and Borni Tukiwaho are proud to be part of Te Rehia Theatre’s groundbreaking theatre piece that unveils the innovative ‘Maori Mask’ art form, known aste mata kokako o rehia.
Matariki is a time of gathering together around the fire and whiling away the long cold nights with storytelling, a time for whakawhanaungatanga, a time for looking back in respect and forwards in hope. Join Te Rehia Theatre in celebrating Matariki with their new story Hoki Mai Tama Mā, by Tainui Tukiwaho.
Hoki Mai Tama Mā is an innovative Māori Theatre show that introduces a new artform using "Matarua" Māori Mask. This new medium, which will be a first in theatre, explores the interface of Modern Māori Theatre, traditional mahi whakaari such as Kapa Haka and the historic art form of Commedia dell’Arte (Italian Mask comedy).
Our story goes like this......
On the eve of Matariki, Tama returns home after having gone to Italy to collect Koro, his runaway grandfather. Why he ran off he is a mystery that Tama and his cousin Bella take upon themselves to solve. Armed with their Koro’s diary and the earthy logics of their neighbour Nuku they discover Koro’s past as a prisoner of war and uncover a profound secret he’s kept to himself ever since. This funny and moving tale journeys between WWII Italy and Modern day rural Aotearoa as we learn the true meaning of forgiveness and whanaungatanga.
